Nate Bower runs fitness retreats. I cut three promo clips for one of them inside about a week.
A retreat is a high-consideration purchase. Someone is being asked to spend real money, take time off, and travel somewhere to be physically uncomfortable in the company of strangers. The promo has to do more emotional work than a normal ad.
Most promo work sells something the viewer can already picture. A product, a shop, an event they understand the shape of.
A retreat is different because the thing being sold is a version of the buyer, not an object. What they are actually purchasing is a few days of being someone slightly different, and footage of people exercising does not automatically communicate that.
Cut it wrong and it looks like a gym advert. The gap between those two is entirely in the edit.
The training is the content of a retreat but rarely the reason for booking one. The setting, the distance from normal life, the sense of a contained few days elsewhere, that is the pitch.
Opening on environment rather than exertion frames the whole piece as an escape rather than a session.
Fitness footage defaults to peak effort, and peak effort is intimidating to the exact person who is undecided about coming. The most persuasive frames are usually the recovery moments. People talking, laughing, being unremarkable together.
Those shots tell a nervous viewer that they will be welcome, which is the actual objection standing between them and booking.
Three clips, one destination. A promo that is beautiful and leaves the viewer unsure what to do next has failed at its only job. The close is unambiguous and it is the same across all three.
Three promo clips delivered in about a week, fast enough to be posted while the retreat was still fillable.
Thanks for the fast turnaround, the promo looks good to go, will post it in a little while.

Book a callThe one project where I ran the camera as well as the edit. Five shooting sessions in an indoor gym, each turned around client-ready in 24 hours.
Promo Shorts for a trading card business covering a live event and the store, where a late delivery does not miss a slot, it misses the event.
A spec Short cut from an agadmator video and published on the channel, on a format that offers none of the reaction shots short-form editing normally depends on.
